Her latest project, Arcade AI, pushes the boundaries further by employing generative artificial intelligence to transform how jewelry is designed and customized. Launched in beta in September, Arcade AI is designed to empower users—dubbed “Dreamers”—to bring their jewelry visions to life, offering a unique twist to the conventional marketplace experience.
Arcade AI stands apart from traditional jewelry platforms by shifting creative control directly into the hands of consumers. The process is straightforward: users can input their ideas or even upload images directly into an AI generator that produces a range of jewelry options. The design can later be turned into a tangible piece crafted by skilled artisans collaborating with Arcade. From earrings to necklaces, users can explore an array of materials, including gold, brass, and a selection of precious gemstones like diamonds and rubies.
During my experience testing the platform, I put my personal tastes front and center, highlighting a fondness for opals. The generative AI produced a stunning gold floral necklace, and after confirming my design with a manufacturer, I awaited its arrival, which was promptly delivered within two weeks. While the design captured my essence beautifully, it’s worth noting the challenges that accompanied the manually-driven AI design process.
Despite the ingenuity behind Arcade AI, the platform isn’t without its imperfections. The AI struggled to support more intricate designs, such as incorporating multiple charms into one piece or generating complex shapes like a twenty-sided die. This limitation is a crucial aspect of developing an AI-based design tool—it needs to align with the practical capabilities of artisans responsible for materializing the designs. As Naficy mentioned, constraints are necessary to ensure that data is manageable and that the designs can be executed effectively.
However, Arcade offers a silver lining with an editing feature that allows users to refine their concepts. This editing tool provides a layer of customization that enables Dreamers to adjust elements to better align with their vision. Naficy is keen on enhancing these features further, introducing Image Prompt (IP) Adapters that will allow users more granular control over the elements within their designs.
Jewelry customization can come at a premium, a fact that is reflected in Arcade’s pricing structure. Depending on the design complexity, users could find themselves paying anywhere between $100 and over $1,000 for a final product. For my own custom design, I paid around $186, which included shipping. The costs are shaped by multiple factors, including materials and sizes, and are primarily set by the artisans themselves. This pricing model sheds light on the value of handmade goods while considering consumers’ varying budgets, highlighting the balance between quality and affordability.
Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of Arcade AI is Naficy’s ambition to curate a community where the act of designing is as enriching as the end product—especially for those who may not have the means to purchase their creations. The platform encourages Dreamers to engage without the pressure of a financial commitment, fostering creativity and interpersonal connection through “Dream Boards,” which serve as profiles for showcasing designs.
Furthermore, Arcade opens avenues for collaboration by allowing users to earn from their designs through a commission-based system. To sell, users need to amass followers and meets sales criteria, thereby establishing a grassroots community of creators benefiting from their creative content.
However, the integration of AI in creative design raises valid concerns in the artistic community. Many independent designers may fear that replicating unique pieces through generative algorithms could infringe on intellectual property rights or even threaten their livelihoods. Yet, Naficy emphasizes the supportive attitude of the artisans onboard Arcade, who view the platform as a means to engage with consumers directly and gain insights into their design preferences.
Naficy’s perspective reflects a complex narrative where innovation meets tradition, aiming to uplift artisans rather than undermine their craft. With advanced safety protocols, Arcade AI implements features to protect original designs, allowing unique expressions while navigating the new landscape of AI-generated and human-crafted artistry.
